The History of the Zoo School
Our journey began in 1976 with Mr. Zellin and the founding of the "Ornamental Birds and Exotics" club at the 12th POS. Initially, we kept a few budgerigars, zebra finches, and Japanese rice birds in simple box cages in the biology preparation room.
In the autumn of 1976, with the support of the school's technical staff, parents laid the foundation for our current facilities. In the school's atrium, they built shelters and aviaries from fragments and leftover building materials. At that time, the residential area around the school was under construction, making building materials easy to obtain.
The club was officially registered with the Education Department of the former City Council of Suhl. The municipal educational institution also showed great interest in our project and provided financial support.
The number of students joining was significant. To this day, around 260 students actively participate or help in their free time with the care and maintenance of the animals at the school.
Annually, about 25-30 students have participated in the past, officially registering as members. Among them, half were very active, attending events daily or several times a week. Additionally, we have diligent helpers who work with us temporarily.
Interacting with the animals, taking care of them, and feeding them not only provides a meaningful leisure activity but also helps cultivate valuable character traits.
Equally important, the children and teenagers get to have an outdoor experience with us. No PCs, no cell phones, no TV—just real life.
